Overcoming Procrastination By Joan Kisver, WorkSmart
September 9 has been set aside as Fight Procrastination Day. We all know that procrastination should be fought every day.
Procrastination is the reason we find ourselves in our particular state of disorganization. It is a vicious cycle. We originally become disorganized because we have procrastinated. We have procrastinated about making decisions. Clutter is delayed decision. When the situation gets out of hand, we procrastinate more because it has become so overwhelming that we don't want to deal with it. The longer we procrastinate, the worse it gets. The worse it gets, the more overwhelming and the more we procrastinate.
There are many reasons why we procrastinate. The task is unpleasant, boring or unmanageable. Some procrastinators are afraid of failing. Other procrastinators fear success. Other procrastinators may lack discipline.
Procrastinators always have excuses. They say they are too busy. They believe they have plenty of time to complete a particular project.
How can you stop procrastinating? First, make up your mind to stop. Don't ever feel that you have all the time in the world. As we all know, the unexpected always happens. If a task is unmanageable or boring, break it up into smaller segments. If you are working on an unmanageable project at work, schedule each segment on your calendar to insure that you finish the project by its deadline. Reward yourself for completing a project on time. Tackle unpleasant tasks first and get them out of the way.
Once we have decided to stop procrastinating, every day will be Fight Procrastination Day.
